Once upon a time...back in the early 1950's...the mail-order business
was in its infancy...hosiery was selling like hotcakes...and National's
founder, Eddie Smith, was living in Lexington, North Carolina — "smack
dab" in the heart of America's hosiery-knitting country.
National Takes Off...

"Dear Customer Friend,
I was young and full of energy — so eager to find a way to do better
by my beloved wife, Sarah, and our two little ones, Eddie Jr. and
Lynda. Then it came to me. Maybe I could sell hosiery by mail.
In September 1952, our shop abuzz with excitement, 3 loyal
co-workers and I rushed to fill our very first order for a
dozen pair of hose. From there, we never looked back —
there wasn't time — vroom-m-m...National just took off!
